HBL running on the PS Vita

Posted on 03:24 by Unknown

Wololo has managed to run a Megadrive emulator in the hacked PSP emulator side of the PS Vita. This is using tech4′s save game exploit. Its still work in progress and Wololo is working to port over Half Byte Loader aka HBL to the PS Vita. The above video speaks for itself, Sonic and Knuckles playable via emulator Picodrive. This is great news. Wololo has outlined there is still a lot of work to do and has discovered a few possible road blocks on the PS Vita.

Wololo on this:

This is technically HBL rising from the deads, running on the PS Vita, and loading the picodrive emulator. Usually I would show you the entire loading process, but you’ll understand that some of the things I do (in particular the exploit used) need to be kept under wraps until the whole thing is made public (if it is ever made public, read more below). I hope however that given my reputation on the PSP scene this won’t be categorized as a fake, please understand that I can’t show much this time. Picodrive is one of the easiest homebrews to run on HBL for some reason, that’s why I’m using it in my test. People who’ve used HBL a lot in its early days will recognize the sound glitch, this is some 22kHz sound being played at 44kHz, or the other way around, I can never remember. That’s because the PSP emulator is using PSP’s firmware 6.60, for which HBL’s syscall estimation code seems to be a bit useless. (I am still pending some reply from Teck4 to see if it would make sense to “officially” involve more hackers on this port, and see if we can fix those syscalls problems. For now, as far as I know I’m the only one who made it that far on the Vita, and I feel kind of lonely on this new hacking scene ^^).

PS Vita unboxing video from Japanese release

Posted on 03:09 by Unknown

The PSV has been out for just over two days now and many gamers in Japan are enjoying their new shiny PS Vita’s. Unfortunately the rest of the world has to wait till the 22nd of Febuary 2012 before we can get our hands on one. (Unless of course you want to import one for over twice the recommended retail price!) Love ‘em or hate ‘em here is one of the better PS Vita unboxing videos around. This user has taken there time to show every single detail. So much time infact its not till the second video they actually unpack the PS Vita unit itself

Ps Vita Firmware Extractor Released

Posted on 04:44 by Unknown

While the PS Vita has yet to grace Japanese store shelves, it would seem hackers are already poking around Sony’s new hardware. SKFU – a name you may recognize from the early days of PS3 hacking scene has released a firmware extractor for system software version 00.945.040.
Judging from the version string, it seems likely this is a development build of the firmware not publicly available. In any case, chances are it will not be the same firmware pre-installed on launch units.

Moreover, this tool merely extracts the firmware, it does not decrypt any of the modules within. Regardless, we’re sure this will spark some interest among the homebrew crowd.

BlinkLED v1.1 Released

Posted on 16:52 by Unknown

I'm not sure if it's only me or if anyone else even noticed this.  Starting with FW 6.20 and later versions the WiFi LED has been switched up by Sony.  If you haven't noticed you sure will now.  It drives me crazy.  Anyway, the issue that I'm talking about is when you are on an active WiFi connection the LED just stays solid green instead of flashing and letting you know that data is being transfered.  I guess it's not that big of a deal but it bugs me.

Thanks to some good work by PSP Homebrew dev yuh0q223 and his update to BlinkLED you don't have to worry about this annoyance anymore.  After installing BlinkLED the WiFi LED will blink when there is activity.  You install and activate BlinkLED in vsh.txt and game.txt.

PlayStation Network Maintenance Scheduled for Tomorrow

Posted on 17:15 by Unknown

Sony’s announced that the PlayStation Network will be offline tomorrow for most of the day, from approximately 8am until 10pm PST, clocking in at just over 14 hours. Users will be unable to access the PlayStation Store on both PSP and PS3, as well as account management and registration options during this timeframe.
Those already authenticated in PSN before the maintenance window hits may be able to continue playing online. No further details were spared, so we wouldn’t expect any surprises once PSN is back up and running. In the interim, sounds like a prime time to get busy with the single-player epic that is Skyrim.

Upcoming Change To PlayStation 3 And PSP Game Content On PlayStation Network

Posted on 17:29 by Unknown

Game content downloaded from PlayStation Network (psp,ps3), after November will be dropped from 5 authorized activations to 2, meaning no more game-sharing for you and all your four other friends ... it's just you and one other -- so pick your one friend wisely. Unless of course someone comes up with a clever hack or workaround...
SCE plans to provide an account management website service letting you deactivate devices attached to your PSN account, instead of having to call their support line for them to deactivate the devices you no longer have access to. And believe me that's annoying. You can also manage activation settings through the PSP (or PS3) itself, should you still have the PSP (or PS3) in question.
The activation/license rights apply to all PSP models: PSP-1000/2000/3000 and of course the PSPgo.

Sony Reveals Digital Discounts for UMD Owners

Posted on 13:13 by Unknown

Sony is launching a currently Japan-only initiative dubbed UMD Passport that will allow existing UMD owners to purchase digital conversions of titles they already own at a discount for PS Vita. Previously, the idea was merely being considered, but now it’s official.

How does it work? The program, which is run on a PSP — presumably for verification purposes, prompts users to register their UMD disc by following the on-screen instructions. From there, the title will display on the PS Store at the discount price.

Sony has offered up a complete list of eligible titles, with prices ranging from the 500 to 1500 yen mark ($20 US). Bare in mind the program has not been announced for other regions at this time. Given currency rates and licensing, pricing and available titles would of course differ if SCEA and SCEE roll out equivalents.
